Staying Motivated During the Cold Weather Months
I have to admit—the older I get, I really hate being cold. Cold weather is my arch-nemesis!
For those who don’t know me, I used to live in Canada and Montana, where winter isn't just a season—it's a survival challenge. I know what real snow looks like. I took my driving test with so much snow on the ground that the plowed streets had walls of snow as high as the car.
I also know what real cold feels like—the kind where exposed skin can get frostbite in mere minutes.
Now, compared to that, Midwest winters aren’t that bad. But let’s be real—they’re still cold enough to make me question my life choices every time I step outside. Walking just two blocks to my gym? It feels like the wind is slicing through my bones.
And don’t get me started on February—my absolute least favorite month. It’s peak winter misery, and all I want is stews, soups, and chilis to keep me warm. And why do I suddenly crave bread like it’s my long-lost soulmate? I’ll buy a loaf of sourdough, and poof—it’s gone in two days.
Getting out of bed? No, thank you.
Bundling up to go to the gym? Hard pass.
Opening the door just to get smacked in the face with freezing air? Absolutely not.
Honestly, I think I also get a touch of seasonal depression with these endless gray, cloudy days. So, how do we stay motivated during this time? Or should we even try? Is it okay to take a winter break?
Let’s Get Mindful About Winter Habits
Instead of fighting winter, maybe we should lean into it—understanding our bodies, making small adjustments, and giving ourselves a little grace. Here are some key things to consider:
- Hydration Is Still a Thing
It’s easy to forget about water in the winter. I mean, the last thing I want when I’m already cold is cold water. I’d rather sip on coffee in the morning, tea in the afternoon, and maybe a hot chocolate at night.
But here’s the thing—dehydration can make you feel colder. Water helps regulate body temperature, so if you’re feeling extra chilly, you might just need more H2O. Keep sipping, even if it means drinking warm lemon water instead of ice-cold water.
- Get Those Extra Zzz’s
Our bodies naturally want more sleep in the winter, and guess what? That’s totally normal. Aim for at least 8 hours, but don’t stress if you need a little more.
Fun fact: Studies show that women need more sleep than men. So, if you feel like hitting snooze or crawling into bed earlier—listen to your body. Winter is the perfect time for restorative sleep.
- Winter Changes Our Caloric Needs
Cold weather affects how we burn calories and what we crave. Here are some fun facts you can throw out at your next trivia night:
- Cold weather increases energy for thermoregulation. Your body works harder to maintain a stable temperature, which burns more calories. So, if you’re outside skiing, running, or shoveling snow, you’re burning extra energy.
- Cold exposure activates brown fat (BAT). This special fat helps generate heat by burning calories. People who live in colder climates tend to have more active brown fat, which means they naturally burn more energy in the winter.
So, if you’re out there building a snowman or sledding, don’t be surprised if you come back extra hungry—your body actually needs more fuel.
- Managing Those Winter Comfort Food Cravings
If you’re more of a hibernate-under-blankets type (same), then your body might crave extra carbs as a survival instinct. Instead of fighting it, work with it.
Here’s how to balance cravings without sabotaging goals:
β
Adjust your macros—increase healthy carbs like sweet potatoes, oats, and whole grains.
β
If fat loss is your goal, make sure you’re eating enough protein and fiber to stay full.
β
Limit processed foods & sugar—winter cravings can spiral into a junk food free-for-all if we’re not mindful.
β
Boost comfort foods with whole foods—add extra veggies to stews, soups, and chilis.
β
Watch portions on indulgent foods—if you know you’ll demolish an entire loaf of sourdough (ahem guilty πβοΈ), portion it out.
β
Enjoy your food, guilt-free. Slow down, chew, and savor every bite.
Final Thoughts: Spring Is Coming… Right?!
I’m really hoping winter only has a few weeks left. I’m already daydreaming about sunshine, fresh air, and not having to wear 12 layers of clothing.
Until then, stay warm, stay mindful, and be kind to yourself. Winter might slow us down, but it doesn’t have to stop us. And hey—if you need an extra nap and a bowl of chili to get through it, I won’t judge.
Spring is coming! Stay warm out there! π·βοΈ
